Filed Your Income Tax Return? Don’t Forget to E-Verify It
And Associates
Filing an Income Tax Return is not the final step in completing the return-filing process. After filing, taxpayers are required to verify their ITR through the prescribed modes. The Income Tax Department has recently reminded taxpayers whose returns for AY 2026-27 are pending verification to complete the process. An ITR that remains unverified within the prescribed timeline may not be treated as a validly filed return, subject to the applicable provisions and available remedies. Income Tax India
Why Is E-Verification Important?
Once an ITR is successfully verified, the Income Tax Department can proceed with its processing. Taxpayers expecting a refund should therefore particularly ensure that verification is not pending. E-verification can generally be completed electronically through the options available on the Income Tax e-Filing portal, avoiding the need to physically submit the acknowledgement where electronic verification is used.
How Does It Matter to Taxpayers?
Taxpayers should not stop at seeing the status “ITR Filed.” They should log in to the e-Filing portal and confirm that the return has also been successfully verified. Businesses should similarly ensure that returns filed on behalf of companies, firms and other entities have completed all applicable post-filing requirements.
