The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has issued Notification No. 133/2026, amending the existing administrative framework governing Joint Commissioners (Appeals) and Additional Commissioners (Appeals).

Under the revised notification, these appellate authorities are placed under the jurisdictional Principal Chief Commissioner or Chief Commissioner of Income-tax for administrative purposes. The amendment provides clarity regarding the supervisory structure applicable to these authorities.

What Does This Mean for Taxpayers?

Businesses involved in income-tax appeals should distinguish between the administrative jurisdiction of an appellate authority and the legal process governing their appeal.

The notification concerns the administrative reporting structure of specified appellate authorities. It does not, by itself, change the statutory time limits for filing appeals, the grounds on which an appeal can be filed or the merits of an existing tax dispute.

Why Does This Matter to Businesses?

Companies and other taxpayers facing assessment-related disputes should maintain proper records of their appeals, notices, submissions and orders.

While the latest notification clarifies the administrative framework, taxpayers should continue to monitor proceedings through the prescribed channels and comply with applicable statutory requirements.

A well-documented appeal, supported by relevant facts, reconciliations and legal submissions, remains important for effective resolution of income-tax disputes.
