Tax Audit Report Filed? Your Income Tax Compliance Is Not Yet Complete

Businesses covered by the extended tax-audit deadline for Assessment Year 2026-27 must furnish their applicable Tax Audit Report by 21 October 2026. However, uploading the Tax Audit Report does not complete the Income Tax Return filing process. CBDT has separately extended the ITR filing deadline for the specified category of taxpayers from 31 October 2026 to 21 November 2026, providing additional time to finalise the return after the audit.

What Should Businesses Check After Filing the Tax Audit Report?

Once the Tax Audit Report is filed, businesses should reconcile the audited financial statements with the computation of taxable income. Particular attention should be given to depreciation, tax disallowances, brought-forward losses, TDS credits, advance tax payments and other adjustments affecting taxable income.

Businesses should also ensure that the Tax Audit Report has been accepted by the taxpayer on the Income Tax e-Filing portal, wherever applicable, and that the figures reported in the Income Tax Return are consistent with the audited financial statements and relevant tax-audit disclosures.

Why Does This Matter to Businesses?

A completed Tax Audit Report does not automatically mean that the Income Tax Return is ready for filing. Differences between the audit disclosures, financial statements and tax computation can lead to incorrect income reporting, tax-credit mismatches or subsequent queries from the Income Tax Department.

Businesses should therefore use the period available until 21 November 2026 to complete the necessary reconciliations, review their tax computation and file an accurate Income Tax Return within the prescribed deadline.
